Delta Smelt Plight Makes Prime Time!
KPIX TV ran a Delta smelt segment that aired last night. I
just finished reviewing the video on the KPIX website and it is
the best coverage on the plight of the fishery to date. Tony
Russomanno did a feature that included an interview with Bill
Jennings. I spoke with Tony the day prior to the interview about
the possible extinction of the smelt and other pelagic species.
He mentioned that he gave credence to the DWR arguments that it
was toxicity from Delta inflows that caused the problem. I told
Tony that toxicity was an issue, but water project operations
were clearly the prime culprit in this case. I mentioned we had
been trying to get the Water Boards to bring "agricultural
return flows" under control for years with great difficulty
and next to no cooperation from the state government. I
recommend that he interview CSPA's Executive Director Bill
Jennings to get the insider view of what was taking place behind
the smoke and mirrors crafted by the government.
You can find the video at http://cbs5.com/video/?id=24009@kpix.dayport.com
It is clearly the best TV media report I have seen on the
subject including the coverage of the litigation we filed
against DWR and won. None of these interviews got more than a
minute of air time and did little to educate the public.
However, Bill and Tony did a great job and this is the kind of
media coverage we need to make sure the big picture information
gets out to the public!
If you can muster the time, copy the link below and sent it
out to as many friends and allies as possible, as we need to
educate as many folks as we can. It's important to consider that
we have a narrow window of opportunity to impact our government.
At last count, Water For Fish had 14,000 petition signatures
that the Allied Fishing Groups we will be using to notify the
Governor and key legislators that people care about the Delta
and our fisheries. Please consider taking a few minutes to
forward this email to friends and family and ask them to support
our efforts to save the Delta and its fishery resources by
logging on to http://www.water4fish.org/ and signing on to the
petition.
Thanks, John
