Success: Funding Increase Likely for Streamgages

By Bill Jennings, Executive Director, CSPA
June 7, 2009 -- Last year and again this March, CSPA joined with other NGOs in urging increased funding for the US Geological Survey's (USGS) Cooperative Water Program (CWP) and National Streamflow Information Program (NSIP).  We believed our efforts have contributed to proposed increased funding in both programs.

Both CWP and NSIP provide the crucially needed scientific information needed for numerous essential decisions regarding waterways.

The streamgage program is particularly important as 780 of the 7,550 active streamgages have been discontinued in recent years and another 250 are identified as at risk of being discontinued.   Streamgages are crucial for being able to effectively make water resource and infrastructure decisions.

USGS has requested 5 million additional dollars for this year for streamgages and will request additional funding as the agency is able to effectively utilize more resources to restore the program (any faster funding increase would go to waste).

USGS is also recommending that the Cooperative Water Program receive significant additional funding.  Subcommittee Chairman Dick (WA) and Ranking Member Simpson (ID_ have pointed out that Congress hasn't given enough to meet needs for many years.

CSPA will continue to work with the Riverwork Coalition to restore and augment these vital instream programs.
