Five California Congress Members ask for accountability by NOAA
and U.S. Fish and Wildlife regarding their participation and
input to the Bay-Delta Conservation Plan
June 24, 2008. In a strongly worded letter citing the failure
of NOAA and USF&W to "restore, recover and
protect," the delta fisheries over the last 16 years, five
California Members of Congress have asked NOAA and USF&W to
respond to a series of seven questions regarding their agencies
efforts in dealing with the Bay-Delta Conservation Plan,
restoring healthy fisheries and scientific monitoring
Stating that much of the Bay-Delta Conservation Plan seems to
be driven by those interested in water exports rather than the
health of the delta and sustainable delta fisheries, the members
pointed out that NOAA and USF&W have totally
failed in their mission to double fish populations in a ten year
period and are, in fact, six years past the deadline as required
by the Central Valley Project Improvement Act passed by Congress
16 years ago!
The members also recognized the need for credible
scientific judgment to be made in the amount and timing of flows
to the delta and that this decision should NOT be left to the
some of the largest water agencies in California, whose main
function is to export some 6 million acre feet of water out of
the delta.
The Congress members have asked the two agencies to respond to
their requests by August 1st.
