Volunteer for SFPUC Fish Surveys in Alameda Creek...SalmonAid Festival June 20-21...Rivers of a Lost Coast Screening April 21 and 22 in Berkeley

March 26, 2009 -- The S.F. Public Utilities Commission biologists have begun fish this year's surveys of the landlocked steelhead trout populations in and above Calaveras and San Antonio Reservoirs. They need volunteers to help with monitoring their fish traps and recording data about fish.

This is a great opportunity to see the remote and beautiful streams that drain into the reservoirs and to handle some gorgeous rainbow/steelhead trout while gathering important data for fish restoration purposes. It is a half-day commitment to go out in the field with the biologists, and volunteers can sign up for multiple days. They need volunteers right away, especially on weekdays.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact Aaron Brinkerhoff of the SFPUC at abrinkerhoff@sfwater.org.

SalmonAid Festival June 20-21

The second SalmonAid will be held this year on Saturday, June 20 and Sunday, June 21 - the festival will celebrate wild salmon and steelhead with a free, family-friendly, music festival in Oakland's famed Jack London Square.

Organized by the largest ever coalition of West Coast salmon advocates (including commercial, recreational and tribal fishermen, conservation organizations, chefs, restaurants, scientists, and many others), SalmonAid will raise awareness of the plight of west coast salmon populations, the rivers and streams they spawn in, and the many coastal and inland communities that rely on salmon for their livelihoods and survival. The festival will feature educational booths, activities and foods highlighting the natural history of salmon, as well as the history, culture and traditions of salmon towns and the peoples connected through our west coast salmon heritage There will be two days of salmon barbeques, live music (20 bands on 2 stages), a gourmet food court and beer garden, and information booths by salmon protection organizations, including the Alameda Creek Alliance. Best of all, there is no admission fee! www.salmonaid.org

The ACA will need volunteers to help staff our information table and also to help with the set up and running of the SalmonAid event.

Rivers of a Lost Coast Screening April 21 and 22 in Berkeley

On Tuesday, April 21st and, Wednesday, April 22nd, Rialto Cinemas Elmwood in Berkeley presents Rivers of a Lost Coast.

Rivers of a Lost Coast is a documentary that tells the story of the man made changes to California’s north coast ecology through the lens of fly fishing. It is a well crafted and engaging story with a unique perspective. The historical footage is amazing. The scope of what has been lost is overwhelming.

Both evenings Directors Justin Coupe and Palmer Taylor will be available for a Q & A after the screening.
