A "Rockrolling" report

Black Bass group improves habitat at Lake Del Valle

"Rockrolling" is a term used to describe the efforts to restore habitat on streams and lakes, clean up rivers or other "hands-on" efforts. While CSPA fights for water and fish in hearing rooms, meetings and sometimes the court room, rockrolling is also an important function of taking back our waterways. Hands-on activities such as habitat improvement give a sense of ownership to those engaged in the activity and that ownership translates to a greater concern for the water way and its fisheries. CSPA salutes the Delta-Foothills Chapter of the Black Bass Action Committee and encourages other clubs to get involved in some "rockrolling" projects. Ed.

January 16, 2009 -- Last Saturday, January 10th, the Black Bass Action Committee, East Bay Regional Parks and Walton's Pond sponsored a fishing habitat construction where unsold Christmas trees were brought up to Lake Del Valle by the tree vendors. Once there, volunteers from local Boy Scout troops, high schools, bass clubs and other volunteer fishermen and women were able to take the trees down to the lake bed and tie them to anchored chains. When the lake rises, the anchored trees will provide many years of fish habitat where native fish can lay their eggs and mature. In addition, the formation of moss and native weeds through out these structures will improve water clarity and the overall health of the lake.

The crews started at 8:00am and finished at noon. Once the work was done, the Black Bass Action Committee provided lunch for the hard working 65 boy scouts and other volunteers. All of the sponsors would like to extend a broad "thank you" to all the participants. Great job, well done.
