"The buzz around the show was about conservation, and CSPA was the one name always in the mix. Even Blanton's program recognized CSPA as being the leader in this fight."

CSPA gains 26 new members at San Mateo ISE over weekend

January 12, 2009 - CSPA's membership grew by 26 in four days thanks to efforts by both volunteer and CSPA staff efforts. Even more important, the word was out that CSPA is "the" conservation group that is actually doing something to bring about the change necessary to restore our fisheries. According to John Ryzanych, of Allied Fishing Groups, "The buzz around the show was about conservation, and CSPA was the one name always in the mix. Even Blanton's program recognized CSPA as being the leader in this fight."

Although the show was lightly attended on Thursday and Friday, volunteers Stan Bricker, (Thursday and Friday mornings) and Barry Williams, (Thursday evening) along with CSPA staff Corey Cate and Jerry Neuburger got the ball rolling with a number of sign ups for the newsletter and 13 memberships.

Saturday was the big day with the booth manned by CSPA's John... (Continued)  Beuttler, Conservation Director, Chris Shutes, FERC Projects Director, and Jerry Neuburger, webmaster. A crowd was at the booth all day, signing up for the weekly newsletter and signing up as members at different donation levels. Premiums handed out included CSPA ball caps, polo shirts and fleece jackets. Sunday was very slow, with no new memberships but lots of people signing up for the weekly e-Mail newsletter.

The hot fishing topics at the booth included the progress on restoring the Klamath including the removal of the dams, the collapse of the salmon fishery, the restricted trout stocking, the "peripheral canal" and delta issues, the cost of licenses with few benefits and poor DFG management along with a scattering of local and regional issues involving warm water, cold water and ocean species.

In additional to individual memberships at levels as high as $150, CSPA also received corporate sponsorship from Lower Putah Creek Watershed Portal ($500) and American Fishing Foundation ($250).

Dan Blanton, a noted fly fishing author, world fisherman, delta guide and website and bulletin board host, talked up CSPA at his presentations as well as speaking to various manufacturers, paving the way for our future contact. His efforts brought quite a few anglers to the booth, following up on the good things they heard.

Now that this show is over, CSPA will begin to focus on the Fly Fishing Show in Pleasanton, February 27, 28 and March 1st. We HOPE to have a booth there and are still waiting from the show's promoter. Unfortunately, the idea of having a booth at the ISE shows was a late one so we were too late to squeeze in at the Sacramento Show.

With the early success of this, CSPA's first effort in quite a while, we'll be back next year for all three.
